IBAN: Definition and purpose
The IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a standardized, unique and electronically processible bank account number, designed to facilitate automatic processing of cross-border credit transfers.
National Bank, along with all Greek banks, has launched the IBAN since 1 October 2001, pursuant to the European Central Bank’s Directive regarding the IBAN implementation in cross-border payments across the EU. Furthermore, since 1 January 2002, following the Hellenic Bank Association decision, the IBAN has also been applied to Domestic Interbank Payments processed via Diastransfer or Hermes.
A standard domestic account can be converted into IBAN format only by the account-servicing bank.
The IBAN is printed on account passbooks and statements and available via any NBG branch.
